Over 1,300 pushed back from India to Bangladesh in May-June

From early May to mid-June 2025, more than 1,300 people were forcibly pushed into Bangladesh by Indian forces along the border, according to Bangladeshi officials, media, and rights groups.
Between May 7 and May 28, about 1,050 to 1,200 people were pushed back, and another 100 to 150 in early June. These pushbacks happened mostly in Panchagarh, Thakurgaon, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Sylhet, and Moulvibazar.
Most of the people are Bengali-speaking Muslims from India’s Assam region. Some are women and children, and a few are believed to be Indian citizens or Rohingya refugees wrongly identified.
India says this is to stop illegal immigration, deal with security threats, and due to political pressure.
But human rights groups and Bangladesh’s government strongly condemn these actions as illegal and inhuman.
The issue is causing tension between the two countries and raising serious human rights and diplomatic concerns.
