Due to allegations of corruption, a court has issued a travel ban and ordered the blocking of the National Identity Cards (NID) of Khan Md. Abdul Mannan, former Inspector General of the Directorate of Registration under the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, and his wife Shakila Begum on Tuesday. 

The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib issued the order following a petition by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). This information was confirmed by the ACC’s Public Relations Officer Akhtarul Islam.

On behalf of the ACC, Assistant Director Md. Shahidur Rahman submitted the petition for the travel ban and NID block.

The petition stated that allegations are under investigation against the former Inspector General (Registration) Khan Md. Abdul Mannan and others regarding the recruitment and transfer of sub-registrars, cancellation of transfers, and recruitment and transfers of various employees of the institution. This includes the appointment of several hundred copyists and the issuance or sale of licenses/certificates to thousands of deed writers, through which assets worth several thousand crores of taka were allegedly acquired.

The matter under investigation is of utmost importance to the state for the prevention of money laundering.

During the investigation, it was secretly learned that the accused persons were attempting to flee abroad. If they escape, there is a strong possibility that the investigation will be prolonged or disrupted. Therefore, it is imperative to prevent them from leaving the country.

Moreover, since all major civic activities in Bangladesh — including the transfer of immovable and movable property, submission of income tax returns, issuance and renewal of passports, and opening and operation of bank accounts — are conducted using the National Identity Card, blocking the NID of the accused individuals is essential to prevent such activities.
