RMP celebrates International UN Peacekeepers’ Day

 The  International United Nations Peacekeepers’ Day was celebrated by Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP)  on Thursday.
 
  This Day is dedicated to honouring the extraordinary sacrifices and contributions of peacekeepers worldwide who participate in UN peacekeeping operations.

Like other countries, Bangladesh is also commemorating the Day with due respect.
 
 On the occasion, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police ( RMP)  organized a special event at the Rajshahi District Council Auditorium.

The event was a heartfelt initiative to express gratitude and respect for peacekeepers who tirelessly work to establish global peace.

The event was presided over by the esteemed Police Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, Mohammad Abu Sufian. Distinguished guests included Barrister Md. Zillur Rahman, Principal of Bangladesh Police Academy, Sarda, Rajshahi; Brigadier General Syed Asaduzzaman, SBP, Deputy Commandant, BIRC, Rajshahi Cantonment; and Mohammad Shahjahan, PPM (Bar), PhD, DIG, Rajshahi Range, Bangladesh Police. The keynote address was delivered by Professor Dr. Saleh Hasan Naqib, Vice-Chancellor of Rajshahi University, with Khondakar Azim Ahmed, NDC, Divisional Commissioner, Rajshahi, as a guest speaker.

The program commenced at 9:30 AM at the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police headquarters with the release of balloons, festoons, and pigeons, symbolizing peace. Representatives from various professions, organizations, and educational institutions participated. A colorful rally followed, after which a discussion session was held at the Rajshahi District Council Auditorium.

The discussion began with the screening of a documentary highlighting Bangladesh’s contributions and efforts in UN peacekeeping missions.

Keynote speaker Professor Dr. Saleh Hasan Naqib noted that Bangladesh has proudly participated in UN peacekeeping missions since 1988. He praised Bangladeshi peacekeepers for their professionalism and humanitarian approach, which have earned global acclaim. They excel not only in establishing peace but also in building strong relationships with local communities. He expressed hope that Bangladesh would continue to play a leading role in peacekeeping and emphasized the importance of language and operational skills.

Barrister Md. Zillur Rahman paid deep tribute to Bangladeshi peacekeepers who sacrificed their lives during UN missions. He highlighted that members of Bangladesh’s police, army, and armed forces are always ready to participate in UN peacekeeping operations. Since 1988, Bangladesh has played a significant role in these missions, with 188 peacekeepers, including 22 police personnel, having made the ultimate sacrifice.

Police Commissioner Mohammad Abu Sufian  chaired the event. He  emphasized the profound significance of International Peacekeepers’ Day. Since 1988, UN peacekeepers have worked tirelessly to establish peace in various countries. Participation in these missions allows peacekeepers to gain insights into different cultures, behaviors, and experiences, enhancing their personal and professional skills.

He added that peacekeepers contribute significantly to the country’s remittance earnings. He prayed for the souls of those who sacrificed their lives and expressed deep sympathy for their families.

Speeches were also delivered by Brigadier General Syed Asaduzzaman, SBP, Deputy Commandant, BIRC, Rajshahi Cantonment; Mohammad Shahjahan, PPM (Bar), PhD, DIG, Rajshahi Range; Khondakar Azim Ahmed, NDC, Divisional Commissioner, Rajshahi; and Afia Akhter, Rajshahi District Administrator. The welcome address was given by Mohammad Khorshed Alam, PPM, Deputy Police Commissioner (Sadar) and recently promoted Additional DIG of RMP. The guests also spoke on the significance of International Peacekeepers’ Day.

The event concluded with the honoring of various institutions participating in International UN Peacekeepers’ Day with commemorative awards.
