MP's son withdraws nomination from Rupganj upazila polls, two elected unopposed

Golam Murtaza Pappa, son of Narayanganj-1 Constituency Member of Parliament Golam Dastgir Gazi, Beerpratik has withdrawn his candidature from the second phase of Upazila Parishad elections.

Two people are competing as chairman candidates in this election. Former member of Narayan Zilla Parishad and director of Rangdhanu Group Mizanur Rahman Mizan and Ferdousi Akhtar Ria were officially elected unopposed as Vice Chairman as there were no rival candidates.

Golam Murtaza Pappa is the Vice President of Rupganj Upazila Awami League and Director of Gazi Group and BCB. Ghulam Murtaza Pappa Gazi said that he has withdrawn his nomination following the ban of the Prime Minister to protect party order.

Ghulam Murtaza Pappa withdrew his candidature on Tuesday (April 30), the last day for withdrawal of nominations.

Narayanganj District Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) and Returning Officer Saqib Al Rabbi confirmed the matter.

According to election office sources, Rupganj Upazila Parishad chairman candidate Tabibul Kadir Tamal, former president of Rupganj Upazila Chhatra League, Gazi Golam Murtaza Pappa, vice president of Rupganj Upazila Awami League, withdrew their nomination papers.

Vice chairman candidate lawyer Swapan Bhuiyan, Rupganj Upazila Awami League organizing secretary Habibur Rahman Harez, local Tanti League leader Russell Ahmed withdrew their nomination papers.

Apart from this, Rupganj Upazila Awami League Women Affairs Secretary Syeda Ferdausi Alam Neela, General Secretary of Daudpur Union Women's League of Rupganj, Ferdausi Jannat Ruma and local Youth Women's League leader Tanya Sultana withdrew their nomination papers.

In addition, the election commission has canceled the nomination papers of Salim Pradhan for the post of chairman of the online casino scandal discussed in the Rupganj Upazila Parishad elections due to his imprisonment in the ACC case.

For that reason, Rupganj Upazila Parishad Chairman Habibur Rahman Habib, member of Rupganj Upazila Awami League Executive Council and former chairman of Rupganj Union Parishad Abu Hosan Bhuiya Ranu are competing for the post.

Mizanur Rahman Mizan, former member of Narayanganj Zilla Parishad and director of Rangdhanu Group, was elected as vice chairman and Ferdausi Akter Ria, president of Rupganj Upazila Jubo Mahila League, was elected unopposed as female vice chairman.

Rupganj upazila election officer Tajalli Islam said that there are 142 polling stations in Rupganj upazila elections this year. 2 lakh 51 male voters, 1 lakh 90 thousand 554 female voters and 2 transgenders. The total number of voters is 3 lakh 90 thousand 607 people.

According to the election schedule, symbol allocation is scheduled on May 2 and Rupganj Upazila Parishad elections are scheduled to be held on May 21.
