Month-long program on 2nd anniv of historic July Uprising at DU

A month-long program has been organized at Dhaka University to commemorate the second anniversary of the historic July Uprising. As part of the program, a candlelight vigil and patriotic music were organized at the Bangladesh-Kuwait Friendship Hall at 8 pm on Friday.

On July 17, 2024 students of this hall protested against the fascist government by lighting candles. In addition, various halls, faculties and departments are holding their own programs.

It is mentioned that a meeting to formulate a program to celebrate the second anniversary of the July Uprising was recently held at Prof Abdul Matin Chowdhury Virtual Classroom. Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam presided over the meeting.

Pro-Vice Chancellor (Admin) Prof Dr. Mohammad Almojaddidi Alfesani, deans of various faculties, principals of various halls, proctors, acting registrars, heads of offices, and representatives of DUCSU and student organizations were present at the meeting.

According to the decision of the meeting, 'July Women's Day' will be celebrated on the university campus every year on July 14 and it will be included in the university calendar. 'July Memorial Pillar' will be constructed at Dhaka University in memory of the martyrs of the July Uprising. The foundation stone of the 'July Memorial Pillar' will be laid on August 5, 2026. For this purpose, a committee has been formed with the Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts as the convener and the Proctor as the member-secretary. The members of the committee are - Chief Engineer, Estate Manager and Lecturer of the Graphic Design Department.

In addition, a 'July Corner' will be set up in the Dhaka University Central Library to commemorate the July Uprising. Where the clothes and other items used by the martyrs in the July Movement, video images, still images and other relevant items will be preserved. For this purpose, a committee was formed with the Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts as the convener and the librarian as the member-secretary. The members of the committee are - Prof Reza Asad Al Huda Anupam of the Department of Graphic Design, Lecturer Mir Muhammad Abdullah Al Mamun Ali of the Department of Graphic Design and the Estate Manager of the university.

A discussion meeting will be held at the Student-Teacher Center Auditorium on the occasion of the July Uprising on August 5, 2026 at 11:00 am. On that day, a Milad and Doa Mahfil will be organized after Asr at the Central Mosque of Dhaka University, Masjidul Jamia.

Each faculty/hall/department/institute will, under its own initiative and management, organize commemorative discussions/seminars/programs throughout the month of July on the subject of the July Revolution and the mass uprising of the students and the public.

Arrangements will be made to exhibit the documentary of the July Movement until August 5 by setting up displays at various points in the university.
In addition, measures will be taken to recognize students, teachers, officials, and employees involved in the July Movement, subject to appropriate evidence.

The July graffiti painted on various walls of the university will be repainted to preserve it. The Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts, the Proctor, and the Director of the Arbori Culture Center will coordinate and take necessary measures in this regard.

An initiative has been taken to publish a memoir on the experiences of students, teachers, officials and employees involved in the July Movement in various ways. In this regard, a committee will be formed to scrutinize and select the writings.

The meeting decided not to involve those who did not support the July mass uprising and were allies of the fallen government and who took a stand against the students and the public in various ways during the July movement in any way in any activities/programs taken to celebrate the day.
