
Momtaz, four others shown arrested in cases over July killings

A Dhaka court today showed five people including former Member of Parliament (MP) from Manikganj-2 constituency and singer Momtaz Begum, arrested in cases lodged over killings that took place during the July-August Mass Uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Partha Bhattacharjee granted the prosecution’s petition to show them arrested in the respective cases.
In one case under Kotwali Police Station, Momtaz Begum and former ward councillor Ranjan Biswas were shown arrested for the killing of Md Shawon, also known as Shawon Mufti.
In another case, former Home Secretary Jahangir Alam and Dhaka Awami League executive committee member Shah Alam Murad were shown arrested over the killing of student Shamim in Dhanmondi.
Meanwhile, former Noakhali Superintendent of Police Md Asaduzzaman was shown arrested in the case over the shooting death of madrasa teacher Moinul Islam in Jatrabari.
Earlier, investigation officers submitted petitions to show the five as arrested in connection with these cases. The court fixed Monday for the hearing, during which all accused were produced before the court. After the hearing, the court ordered their return to jail following arrest procedures.
