Clashes between BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami have been erupted  in Sadar Upazila of Noakhali, leaving at least 40 people injured on both sides.

The incident took place at Kashem Bazar in Newajpur Union of the upazila around 5 pm on Sunday. 

Noakhali District Chhatra Shibir's Publicity Secretary Fazle Rabbi complained that Chhatra Shibir organized a Darsul Quran program at the Kashem Bazar Jame Mosque in the upazila yesterday, Saturday. Jubo Dal was attacked there under the leadership of some Jubo Dal leaders. In protest of yesterday's attack, Chhatra Shibir announced a program of Quran teaching again at the same mosque after Asr prayers on Sunday. After Asr prayers on Sunday, BNP and its affiliated organizations attacked Chhatra Shibir leaders in the mosque. Later, they locked the mosque and blocked it. 25 of our leaders were injured due to the throwing of bricks and stones. When an ambulance went to bring them, it was turned back. Among them, Noakhali City Shibir's Office Secretary Tanvir Siam, Law Secretary Naeem Hossain, Shibir's friend Salauddin, Keramatia Madrasa Chhatra Shibir's president Arafat Ali, and 16 others were seriously injured.

Several local BNP leaders and workers complained that after Asr prayers, Shibir leaders and workers started party activities by raising slogans in the mosque. When BNP leaders and workers stopped them, they attacked them in return. In this, 15 leaders and workers of Newajpur Union BNP and its affiliated organizations were injured. Among them, Newajpur Union BNP's publicity secretary Md. Akhtar, office secretary Jahangir, former president of the union Chhatra Dal Ziaur Rahman and 8 leaders and workers are admitted to the 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital.

Sudharam Police Station OC  Md. Kamrul Islam said, "Police are at the scene after receiving information. The situation is currently under control."
