In what is widely regarded as a promising breakthrough for the insurance industry, the Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (IDRA) has officially commenced operations to clear long-pending, unpaid insurance claims of companies mired in prolonged disarray.
Under the direct supervision and guidance of IDRA Chairman Mir Nadia Nivin, tangible steps have been taken to fulfill promises made to policyholders, bringing an end to their long waits.
As part of this initiative, the partial settlement of long-overdue insurance claims for 523 policyholders of Fareast Islami Life Insurance Company Limited was officially processed on Sunday. In this initial phase, a total of Tk 5.42 crore was disbursed to the claimants.
To ensure absolute transparency and accountability, funds were raised by encashing the company's security bonds. The settled amounts were subsequently transferred directly to the respective bank accounts of the policyholders via the Bangladesh Electronic Funds Transfer Network (BEFTN). This secure and transparent mechanism successfully eliminated the scope for intermediaries or middlemen.
Insiders view this initiative as a highly positive development for policyholders who have been waiting indefinitely for their dues. Stakeholders express optimism that such effective and pragmatic measures will play a crucial role in restoring customer confidence in the insurance sector.
Efforts are currently underway to clear the remaining unpaid claims of Fareast Islami Life Insurance in phases. Necessary steps, including the sale of other company assets, are being taken to arrange the required funds, creating opportunities for a vast number of additional policyholders to recover their long-overdue money.
According to IDRA sources, similar effective initiatives are being adopted not just for Fareast Islami Life, but also for policyholders of other insurance companies that have long struggled with claim settlements. In line with this, plans are underway to initiate the settlement of long-pending claims for seven more insurance companies using the same transparent process next month.
Industry insiders consider IDRA's proactive approach a vital milestone in transforming the insurance sector by ensuring the prompt and transparent settlement of legitimate claims. This initiative has particularly renewed hope among policyholders who had grown frustrated due to prolonged delays in receiving their payouts.
Experts and sector stakeholders anticipate that under the leadership of IDRA Chairman Mir Nadia Nivin, ongoing efforts to protect client interests, establish good governance, increase accountability, and restore public trust will continue unabated.
By resolving long-standing arrears and sustaining regular claim settlements, this drive is expected to significantly boost consumer confidence while laying the foundation for a robust and resilient insurance sector in the country.
