Human chain, memo submitted in protest of attack on journalist Kalvi in Kushtia

Kushtia Correspondent

Journalists and various socio-cultural organizations in Kushtia staged a human chain on Thursday protesting the brutal attack on senior journalist Rofiqul Islam Kalvi. The program was held in front of the Kushtia Deputy Commissioner’s office at 11 a.m.

Journalists from different print, electronic, and online media outlets participated in the human chain. Leaders of political and social organizations also expressed solidarity and extended their full support to the movement.

Speakers at the protest said that the heinous attack on journalist Kalvi was not just an attack on an individual but an assault on the freedom of the press and the fundamental right to free speech. They warned that such incidents pose a serious threat to democracy and the establishment of a transparent society.

The speakers demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those involved in the attack. They also stressed that attempts to silence journalists through violence are unacceptable and will never succeed in suppressing the truth.

Following the human chain, journalist leaders submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Kushtia, calling for urgent steps to ensure the safety of journalists, bring the perpetrators to justice without delay, and adopt effective measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future.

Senior journalist leaders, editors of various newspapers, and media representatives were present during the demonstration.

In their warning, the speakers made it clear that if the attackers are not swiftly arrested and punished, the journalist community in Kushtia will be compelled to announce stronger protest programs.
