HC grants bail to ailing journalist Azhar Ali Sarkar

Staff Correspondent

Prominent journalist Azhar Ali Sarkar was released from custody on Tuesday following an order from the High Court, which granted him bail.

Despite previously securing bail from the higher court, his release had been repeatedly stalled as authorities slapped him with a "show-arrest" in a fresh case just as he was set to walk out of prison. Following a protracted legal battle and rigorous arguments, he finally secured his freedom.

During his prolonged incarceration, his physical condition deteriorated significantly due to a lack of adequate medical treatment. According to family members and legal counsels, he remains severely ill and is currently undergoing medical treatment.

Previously, the High Court had granted him bail in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act, but his release was obstructed through subsequent arrests in other matters.

The final court order ensuring his release has brought a sense of relief to the journalistic community and human rights activists, who have urgently demanded proper and advanced medical care for him.
