
Growers happy with fair price : Bumper yield of bitter gourd in saline land in Morelganj

Bumper yield of sweet bitter gourd in saline land in the fish enclosure of Morelganj in Bagerhat on the coast of the Sundarbans. The taste of sweet gourd in the enclosure is more. As a result, bitter gourd of Morelganj is being marketed in various places in the country, including Kawran Bazar in the capital Dhaka.
A kilogram of bitter gourd is being sold for 40 to 45 taka. On a field visit, it was seen that in 16 unions of Morelganj upazila of Bagerhat, there are beds of bitter gourd spread across the entire village in the fish ponds. The bitter gourds are hanging under these beds surrounded by green leaves.
Farmers are collecting bitter gourds from the market. Not only that, but the local demand is being met by the wholesalers of this village, which are going all over the country. Shahjalal Babu, a successful bitter gourd farmer from Umajuri village in Morelganj, said, "Bitter gourd cultivation is more profitable and less expensive than other crops. The yield here is good due to the use of organic fertilizers." This year, I planted seedlings of various varieties, including bitter gourd, on 10 bighas of land. 500-600 seedlings can be planted in each bigha of land.
The village's bitter gourd is in great demand across the country. The upazila has set a target of producing winter vegetables worth about one crore taka during the season.
Farmers and the Agriculture Department believe that they have achieved success in using new technologies in vegetable production. As a result, along with good production, a vegetable market has been established in Morelganj. Vegetables are cultivated in Morelganj throughout the year.
Korlafaria and wholesale traders are coming from different districts including Dhaka and taking it by truck after bargaining. Bagerhat Reporters Unity President S.M. Saiful Islam Kabir said, the Agriculture Department provides assistance to farmers by providing fertilizer, seeds and training at different times. Various seed companies should occasionally provide assistance to poor farmers by providing fertilizer and seeds.
Morelganj Upazila Agriculture Officer Md. Saiful Islam said, under the sub-project titled Providing material support for sweet pumpkin cultivation in Matsya Gher Bheri, 200 farmers have cultivated pumpkin on 205 hectares of land. They have been provided with seeds, chemical fertilizers and various materials to control insects.
