Govt to elevate healthcare standards by equipping hospitals with advanced tech: Health Minister

Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain Bakul on Thursday said that the government is committed to significantly advancing the quality of domestic medical care by integrating state-of-the-art equipment across all public hospitals.

He made the remarks on Thursday morning during a ceremony held to hand over advanced microscopes and laboratory equipment to the Pathology Department of Dhaka Medical College (DMC).

Addressing the gathering, the minister announced that work has already begun to overhaul the medical education curriculum, redesigning it to mirror international standards. He noted that over the past 17 years, DMC had lagged behind global medical advancements, particularly in its pathology department—the cornerstone of medical diagnostics—where no allocations were made after a crucial government microscope broke down three years ago. The newly provided latest-model microscope will allow doctors to diagnose cancer precisely in a single sitting, bringing a massive upgrade to patient care.

Responding to reporters' queries regarding whether the Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) Super Specialized Hospital would be privatized, Minister Bakul clarified that it will remain completely state-owned but will operate under a modern, non-profit, corporate-style management system. Modeled after world-class institutions like Thailand's Bumrungrad Hospital or Singapore's Mount Elizabeth Hospital, it will feature one-stop emergency services and cutting-edge operational methods.

Turning to the dengue situation, the health minister noted that the government has been proactively conducting cleanliness campaigns at the district and upazila levels for the past two months alongside providing specialized training to doctors.

The event was also attended by Health Secretary Md. Kamruzzaman Chowdhury, Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Professor Dr. Provat Chandra Biswas, Director General of the Directorate General of Medical Education (DGME) Prof Dr. Nazmul Hossain, DMC Principal Professor Dr. Md. Mazharul Shahin, and Vice-Principal Professor Dr. Mosarrat Sultana, among other senior officials.
