Govt takes two-pronged approach to combat dengue: DGHS

Narayanganj Correspondent

Dr. Mohammad Jahangir Alam, Director of the Dhaka Division of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), stated that the government is taking a two-pronged approach to combat dengue. Regular discussions at the Ministry of Health, including virtual meetings with health officials nationwide, are ensuring proper guidance. Additionally, hospitals at district and upazila levels have been equipped to provide necessary testing and treatment facilities.

Dr. Jahangir shared these updates while speaking to journalists on Wednesday (December 4) after visiting the Narayanganj Civil Surgeon’s office, Sadar General (Victoria) Hospital, and the Khanpur 300-Bed Hospital in the city.

He further explained that along with dengue management, the government is actively working on mosquito control. City corporations and local government bodies are playing a key role in mosquito eradication efforts. A meeting on this issue is scheduled to be held today at the Ministry of Health. Dr. Jahangir expressed optimism that the country’s dengue situation will improve soon.

Highlighting the ongoing development work at the Khanpur 300-Bed Hospital, he revealed that it is being upgraded to a 500-bed facility. The final phase of infrastructure development is nearing completion, incorporating advanced technology and equipment to offer comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services.

The upgraded hospital will feature modern diagnostic tools, including MRI and dialysis facilities. Dr. Jahangir urged residents to report any negligence or irregularities in healthcare services to the District Civil Surgeon or Deputy Commissioner.

District Civil Surgeon Dr. Mushiur Rahman added that dengue patients are treated following a standardized protocol. He noted that Victoria Hospital has successfully treated critical patients with platelet counts as low as 5,000 to 8,000. Bangladesh now follows a uniform dengue treatment protocol, ensuring consistent and effective care.

Dr. Jahangir’s visit was accompanied by District Civil Surgeon Dr. Mohammad Mushiur Rahman, Superintendent of Khanpur 300-Bed Hospital Dr. Md. Abul Bashar, and other officials from the local health department.
