Former Proctor of RBRU arrested

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has arrested former Proctor of Rangpur Begum Rokeya University (RBRU) Shariful Islam, who is the accused in the murder case of Shaheed Abu Sayeed, who was shot dead by police during the anti-discrimination student movement in Rangpur. He was arrested from Alamnagar area of Rangpur city at around 11 pm on Monday, November 18.

Rangpur PBI Police Superintendent (SP) Zakir Hossain said that former Proctor of Rangpur Begum Rokeya University Shariful Islam, who is the accused in the murder case of Shaheed Abu Sayeed, who was shot dead by police during the anti-discrimination student movement in front of Gate No. 1 of Begum Rokeya University on July 16, is accused of being present at the scene and giving instructions to the police to shoot. The plaintiff in this murder case is Abu Sayeed's elder brother Ramzan Ali.

The PBI SP said that on August 18, a case was filed mentioning the names of 17 people, including the former IGP of the police, and 30 to 35 unknown names. Later, Ramzan Ali, the elder brother of Shaheed Abu Sayeed, filed a supplementary statement to include the names of 7 people, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bridge Minister Obaidul Quader, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former Proctor of Begum Rokeya University Shariful Islam, in the case. They were included as accused in the statement in the case by the court order. Earlier, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Amir Ali and Constable Sujan Chandra Roy, who were dismissed in the Abu Sayeed murder case, were arrested. Later, the former IGP, the accused in this case, was arrested in Dhaka.

Meanwhile, on November 13, a case was filed against a total of 181 people, including former proctor of Begum Rokeya University Shariful Islam, for the attempted murder of a businessman named Mamunur Rashid Mamun (46).
