Former NCC’s councilor Mati arrested with son

Police have arrested former councilor of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) Ward No. 6 and Convener of Siddhirganj Thana Jubo League, Matiur Rahman Mati, along with his son Babui. They were arrested on Sunday night (January 12) from the Bashundhara Residential Area in the capital. The arrested Matiur Rahman Mati is the son of the late Badsha Mia of Ward No. 6.
Inspector (Investigation) of Vatara Police Station, Sujan Haque, confirmed the arrest and stated that several cases have been filed against them in connection with attacks on students during the anti-discrimination student movement. These cases have been lodged in various police stations, including Vatara, Jatrabari, Siddhirganj, and Fatullah. They will be sent to court under a case filed at Vatara Police Station.
It is worth mentioning that Matiur Rahman Mati was a trusted confidant of former MP Shamim Osman of Narayanganj-4 constituency. Following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government due to the student movement, he went into hiding with his family.
Matiur Rahman Mati was the president of Siddhirganj Thana Jubo League and was known to be close to Shamim Osman. He left Narayanganj after August 5.
Previously, Mati was imprisoned in a corruption case. The case accused him of concealing assets worth Tk 6 crore 1 lakh 72 thousand 265 and illegally acquiring wealth amounting to Tk 10 crore 86 lakh 5 thousand 639.
Additionally, he was accused of depositing Tk 82 crore 51 lakh 424 in various banks over time and subsequently withdrawing Tk 74 crore 13 lakh 88 thousand 689 while concealing the transfer and whereabouts of the funds.
Before August 5, Matiur Rahman Mati was imprisoned in an Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) case related to illegal wealth accumulation.
Two youths killed in road accident in N'ganj
Two young men were killed in a road accident in front of Adamjee EPZ, Siddhirganj, Narayanganj. The accident occurred on Monday (January 13) when a truck collided with a motorcycle. Following the incident, locals detained the truck driver and handed him over to the police. The deceased motorcyclists were identified as Shuvo and Imon.
Siddhirganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahinur Alam confirmed the incident, stating that both riders, Shuvo and Imon, died in the accident. The truck driver has been taken into custody.
Training for professional drivers to enhance skills in Narayanganj
A refresher training workshop was held in Narayanganj to enhance the skills and awareness of professional drivers, aiming to prevent road accidents and ensure safe transportation. The workshop was organized on Monday (January 13) at the hall room of BRTC Depot in Khanpur by the Narayanganj office of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA).
With the theme "Commitment of Student Movement, Safe Roads for Everyone," the primary objective of the workshop was to educate professional drivers on modern driving techniques, road safety laws, and vehicle maintenance.
The workshop was attended by BRTA Narayanganj Circle's Assistant Director, Engineer Md. Mahbubur Rahman, as the chief guest. He emphasized the importance of driver competence, stating, "Acquiring driving skills is crucial, but drivers must also be aware of road safety laws, proper vehicle maintenance, and emergency response capabilities. A skilled driver ensures not only their own safety but also contributes to the safety of all road users. Such training initiatives will make the road system safer and more disciplined."
Other notable attendees included Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain Khan, Medical Officer of the District Civil Surgeon Office; Traffic Inspector Md. Abdul Karim Sheikh; Driving Instructor Md. Zahidul Islam; and BRTA Narayanganj Assistant Revenue Officer Md. Hemayet Hossain.
A total of 200 professional drivers with three different types of licenses participated in the training. They received hands-on instruction on modern driving techniques, traffic regulations, and proper vehicle maintenance.
The organizers expressed optimism that such training programs would not only enhance professional drivers' skills but also play a vital role in reducing road accidents and ensuring safer roads.
