Corruption in road construction: ACC case against engineer, contractor in Gopalganj

Golam Rabbani, Gopalganj

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against a former assistant engineer and contractor after finding evidence of irregularities, corruption and embezzlement in the construction of a road by the Zilla Parishad in Gopalganj.

The case was filed on Monday at the instructions of the ACC Head Office in Dhaka.

The cases against whom have been filed are Habibur Rahman, the head of the contractor organization, and former engineer Anichur Rahman.

The ACC said that an enforcement operation was recently conducted on the charge of leaving the approach road of the bridge in Kashiani unconstructed. During the operation, the ACC found evidence of irregularities, corruption and embezzlement. Later, it recommended a case against them and sent it to the divisional office, where it was ordered to file a case.

ACC sources said, the construction of the road from Arkandi Bridge in Kashiani Upazila of Gopalganj to Maijkandi Canal including three bridges was shown as completed without constructing the approach road in the HBB Karan project.

At the same time, an additional Tk 6.5 lakh was embezzled for the incomplete work bill by submitting the final bill. The ACC investigated Gopalganj and filed a case against them after finding proper evidence in this incident.
