Elderly woman killed in stampeded while receiving zakat money

A 60-year-old woman was killed during a stampeded at a house in Bhobanipur area in Rajbari district town on Sunday morning while taking zakat money.
The incident happened at about 7am.
It was learnt that around 5,000 men and women gathered at the house of Md Delwar Hossain, an prominent businessman in the Bhobanipur area, from the early morning as he was scheduled to distribute zakat money.
When he started distributing money among them, suddenly an elderly woman fell on the ground due to huge rush there.
Another woman on the spot rescued her and took her to Rajbari Sadar Upazila Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared her dead.
Rajbari Police Station OC Md Iftekharul Alam said the body was kept at the hospital morgue.
Legal procedure will be taken after identifying the body, he added.
