A severe Kalbaishakhi storm swept through Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila early Sunday, damaging over 100 homes, shops, crops, and power infrastructure, and disrupting electricity for nearly eight hours, locals and officials said.
The storm, accompanied by heavy rain, struck around dawn, affecting nine unions and one municipality in the upazila. Tin roofs of houses and shops, both permanent and temporary, were torn off, while century-old trees, electric poles, and wires were uprooted or damaged. Fields of maize, paddy, vegetables, and fruit trees—mango, litchi, and malta—were flattened, raising fears of significant agricultural losses.
AKM Faridul Haque, additional agriculture officer for Lalmonirhat Sadar, said, “The storm and rain damaged crops across nine unions and the municipality. Maize, paddy, vegetables, and young fruit have been hit hard. We’re assessing the losses at the field level.”
Mahmudur Rahman, assistant engineer at Lalmonirhat’s power office, reported that fallen trees and poles disrupted electricity supply for about eight hours. “Several teams are working to restore normal power supply,” he added.
Abhijit Chowdhury, acting Upazila Nirbahi Officer, said authorities are collecting data on affected households. “We haven’t yet determined the full extent of the damage,” he noted.
