Md. Nazmul, Morelganj (Bagerhat)

A construction worker was killed and another injured after the wall of an under-construction septic tank collapsed at Gulishakhali Fazil (Degree) Madrasa in Morelganj upazila of Bagerhat district.

The incident occurred around noon on Saturday at the madrasa premises in Nishanbaria Union. The deceased was identified as Atiar Rahman (35), while the injured worker, Nayan, was rescued and sent to a hospital for treatment.

OC of Morelganj Police Station, Md. Mahmudur Rahman, confirmed the death.

According to local residents and the Fire Service, the accident occurred while workers were constructing the septic tank wall. The structure suddenly collapsed, trapping Atiar Rahman and Nayan beneath the debris. Local people initially rushed to the scene, and a team from the Morelganj Fire Service and Civil Defence later joined the rescue operation. After nearly an hour of efforts, Atiar Rahman's body was recovered, while Nayan was rescued alive and taken to a nearby hospital.

The deceased, Atiar Rahman, was the son of Badrul Alam from Agrail village under Jessore Sadar upazila.

Md. Golam Faruk, Team Leader of Morelganj Fire Service and Civil Defence, said the rescue team responded immediately after receiving a call through the national emergency service (999). Following an hour-long operation, they recovered the body of the deceased worker. He also noted that continuous rainfall had left the construction site muddy, and the workers were reportedly working without essential personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety helmets, safety boots, or protective clothing.

Local residents alleged that the collapse may have been caused by the use of substandard construction materials along with pressure from rain-soaked soil.

OC Md. Mahmudur Rahman said the body had been sent to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital for an autopsy and that legal proceedings regarding the incident are currently underway.
