Chattogram Bureau

The Bangladesh Coast Guard detained six fishermen and seized an illegal artisanal trolling boat, trolling nets, and a substantial quantity of marine fish during a late-night raid in the Banshkhali area of Chattogram.

Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Suzon said this in a press release on Friday noon.

According to the official briefing, Coast Guard Contingent Banshkhali conducted a special intelligence-driven operation near the Shekherkhil Ghat area in Banshkhali upazila at 12:30 AM on Friday.

During the raid, security personnel intercepted and searched a suspicious artisanal trolling boat, recovering seven trolling nets and 5,190 kilograms of marine fish alongside the six crew members.

Subsequent legal procedures were carried out in the presence of the Marine Fisheries Officer from the Marine Fisheries Office in Agrabad.

The authorities removed the trolling equipment from the vessel, destroyed the illegal nets, and realized a fine of BDT 300,000 from the boat owners before releasing the vessel and the detained fishermen on a bond. Additionally, the seized marine fish were auctioned off for Tk 375,000. Combined with the collected fine, a total of Tk 675,000 was deposited into the state treasury.

The Coast Guard reaffirmed that its stringent operations to protect national fisheries and marine resources will continue.
