A madrasa student has drowned while bathing in the ocean at a beach in Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf Upazila. Two other children have gone missing.

The incident occurred in the Beach Point area in the Sadar Union around 12:45am on Sunday, according to Muhammad Gias Uddin, chief of Teknaf Police Station.

The deceased was identified as 10-year-old Nur Kamal from Khandakar Para in Ward No. 5 of the union.
The missing have been identified as 10-year-old Mohammad Babul and 12-year-old Manzurul Islam.

A group of 10-15 children went to the Beach Point area around noon on Sunday to play, OC Gias said, citing locals. At one point, they went to bathe in the ocean. Three of the children were then carried away by the current.

Hearing the cries of the children, locals rushed over and were able to recover the body of Kamal. The two other children have yet to be found.

A police team went to the scene once the incident was reported, Gias said. The Teknaf Fire Service has also been informed.

The police, Fire Service personnel, and local fishermen are conducting rescue operations to search for the missing children.

Kamal’s body has been handed over to his family, the OC said.
