A journalist has filed a court case against a self-proclaimed ‘Kabiraj’ (traditional healer) in Sirajdikhan upazila of Munshiganj, alleging physical assault and theft of equipment.
The case was filed by journalist Anisur Rahman in the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Nusrat Sharmin at Munshiganj Amli Court-2. The court’s Branch Assistant (Peshkar) Farid Hossain confirmed the filing.
According to the complaint, Shahjalal Khan, also known locally as Shahjalal Kabiraj, son of the late Abdul Mannan of Rashunia village, has been conducting controversial healing practices under the guise of spiritual treatment and exorcism. Viral videos have surfaced showing him dancing with women at his residence during so-called treatment sessions.
Following reports published by Anisur Rahman and others, Shahjalal Kabiraj and several men allegedly attacked Rahman near Nimtala, around 6:00 PM on Wednesday. “He struck me on the head with a rod and snatched my camera,” said Anisur Rahman. “I had earlier published multiple news stories about his misdeeds and had been receiving threats,” he added.
Locals claimed that Shahjalal was previously employed as a Palli Bidyut lineman, and had defrauded many people by promising electricity meters. Later, he shifted to performing ‘spiritual healing,’ luring women to his home, dancing with them, and extorting large sums of money. His former hideout was reportedly demolished after accusations of desecrating the Holy Quran, though he has since resumed operations with backing from influential circles.
When contacted, Shahjalal Kabiraj denied all accusations. “I do not dance with women, I do not offer fake treatments, and I have not assaulted any journalist,” he said. Regarding reports of gifting a laptop to the police, he claimed: “The Circle SP requested one, so I donated it to Sirajdikhan Police Station. I’m planning to contest for Union Chairman, so I gave it as a goodwill gesture.”
In response, OC Shahed Al Mamun of Sirajdikhan Police Station confirmed, “Our station was damaged by fire on August 5, and Shahjalal later brought a laptop. I wasn’t familiar with him before.” Regarding the assault, he added, “If a formal complaint is received, legal action will be taken.”
