BSMMU researchers find new mutations of Wilson’s disease

Campus Desk

Researchers have identified two new mutations of Wilson’s disease by analysing the genes of patients who came for treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).

The researchers revealed the study findings at a seminar in the university on Tuesday.

The researchers said they have identified two completely new genetic mutations of the rare disease and added the latest study will play an important role in treating the disease in the country.

Researchers and doctors from BSMMU's Department of Neurology and Genetics and Molecular Biology conducted the study.

The university’s Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Deen Md Nurul Haque said the disease affects one in 30,000 people mostly due to marriages between close relatives. The genetic disease causes abnormal accumulation of lead in the brain, liver, eyes and other organs of the patient leading to troubles in walking, talking, movement of hands and other issues.
