In a landmark move to enhance global competitiveness, the National University (NU) of Bangladesh has decided to establish Language Clubs across all of its affiliated colleges nationwide in phases.

The initiative aims to build language proficiency among students not only in Bengali and English but also in third languages such as Mandarin and Japanese. According to NU sources, the clubs will organize regular practice sessions, public speaking activities, debates, presentations, workshops, and language-based competitions, alongside integrating modern technology-assisted learning tools.

The initiative targets a long-standing gap in practical language platforms, particularly benefiting students in rural and remote colleges who typically face limited exposure to foreign language practice.

National University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. A. S. M. Amanullah emphasized that academic degrees alone are no longer enough in today’s competitive global environment. He stated that the primary objective of these clubs is to remove students' hesitation and build confidence to communicate effectively on international platforms.

Education experts, teachers, and parents have welcomed the decision, calling it a timely step to prepare graduates for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, international job markets, and advanced research opportunities.

NU authorities announced that a comprehensive policy guideline for operating the clubs is near completion and will be issued to colleges soon. Additionally, an introductory workshop will be held shortly for affiliated institutions in the Dhaka metropolitan area.
