$250 m investment expected : Dhaka DC Farida Khanom hands over land to Hong Kong -based Handa Group in Keraniganj for economic zone
The formal handover of 36.7180 acres of land has been completed in Keraniganj to advance the establishment of an economic zone backed by Hong Kong-based textile and apparel manufacturer Handa Group, involving a projected investment of USD 25 million—Wait, USD 250 million across the proposed industrial hub.
Dhaka Deputy Commissioner Farida Khanom officially handed over the land possession to Shahin Akter Sumi, Director of Invest Bangladesh Authority, at the designated site adjacent to the new bridge near BSCIC Industrial City in Sonakanda village under Rohitpur Union of Keraniganj Upazila on Thursday.
During the event, compensation cheques were formally handed over to affected land owner Md. Rashed.
Under the initiative, Handa (Dhaka) Textile Company Limited plans to expand its manufacturing operations in Bangladesh by establishing an industrial enterprise within the designated economic zone in Keraniganj. The company intends to invest approximately USD 250 million in the venture, which is expected to generate employment opportunities for around 25,000 people.
Officials noted that the proposed investment will boost local economic momentum and enhance the country's export and production capacity in the textile and ready-made garments sector. Handa specializes in knit textiles, fabric dyeing, and apparel manufacturing.
Addressing the land handover ceremony, Deputy Commissioner Farida Khanom stated that economic zones play a vital role in accelerating industrialization, attracting foreign direct investment, and creating jobs. She expressed optimism that the investment will open new horizons for trade and commerce in Keraniganj while driving socioeconomic progress.
The project falls under the "Construction of Economic Zone in Keraniganj Upazila" initiative implemented by BEZA, covering a total area of 36.7180 acres with an estimated project cost of Tk 210.69 crore. Stakeholders anticipate that the successful realization of Handa Company's investment will significantly expand industrial infrastructure and contribute to national economic development.
