Char Jagla area of Hatiya has become tense  following allegations of obstruction to fishing, terrorist-style attacks, and harassment of fishermen. 

 In protest of these incidents, a massive human chain was organized by people from all walks of life in Ward No. 3, Sukhchar Union on Thursday. 

According to  sources, influential individual Monir Member and his associates have forcibly occupied important canals in Char Jagla and are obstructing fishing. Allegations state that they are evicting poor, helpless, and impoverished fishermen by showing government lease documents (locally known as “daka”) and are attacking and physically abusing those who protest.

Speakers at the human chain alleged that Monir Member has created a reign of terror in the area using his own armed group. They demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment for the accused.

Present at the human chain were Nobi Uddin, Ashraful Islam, Jihad Uddin, Mawlana Ibrahim, Nizam Uddin, Joy, Akash, and around two hundred other local residents.

Speakers at the event included Ismaila Hossain, fisherman Arman, Abul Hashem, Miraj the fisherman, Swapon Chandra Das’s wife Shefali Das, and Monir Majhi’s wife Dilara Begum, among others.

The speakers said, “We live by the river, the canals are our livelihood. Now even that is being snatched away by the powerful. If the government doesn’t take quick action, we will move towards a larger movement.”

They further stated that if the local administration does not act quickly, the law and order situation in Char Jagla will severely deteriorate. Although local fishermen have long relied on these canals for their livelihood, they are now facing a dire crisis due to the occupation by influential groups.

When the accused Monir Member was asked about the matter, he said, "I don’t know anything about the allegations made against me. My home is in Charking. Whatever conspiracy is happening is in Sukhchar, it has nothing to do with me. The land of the char belongs to the Forest Department."
