Early winter vegetables in Tangail market  bring  no relief to consumers

Siraj Al Masud, Tangail

There is no relief in the market of Tangail despite the supply of early winter vegetables. Although several early vegetables have been seen in the space of a week, the prices of brinjal, patal, dhandash, chichinga, gourd and jali pumpkin have not come down. The picture is the same in the fish market. Almost all types of fish are being sold at high prices, which is taking the breath away of low-income buyers. Meanwhile, in the wholesale market, every 5 kg of onion and green chilies are being sold for 200 taka.
This is the scene seen on Tuesday (October 20) morning at Tangail's Wholesale Park Market, Chai Ani Retail Market, and Battala City Market.

The supply of gourd, brinjal, patal, dhyansh, chichinga and jali pumpkin is quite good. However, the prices of vegetables and fish remain unchanged.
And in the retail market

Currently, per kg, Patal is being sold at Tk 50, Dhanash at Tk 80, Chichinga at Tk 50, Dhundal at Tk 50, Jhinga at Tk 40, Karla at Tk 80, Cauliflower at Tk 80, Cabbage at Tk 60 and Carrot at Tk 110. Papaya is being sold at Tk 30 to 40 per kg, Gourd at Tk 60 to 100 depending on the size and Lemon at Tk 50 per Hali. On the other hand, newly arrived winter beans are being sold at Tk 180 to 200 per kg. As the prices in the wholesale market have not come down, these vegetables have been seen being sold at Tk 30 to 40 per kg higher in the retail market.

Vegetable traders said that although there is some advance supply of vegetables, local farmers are
The produced vegetables have not yet reached the market in that form. If the supply increases, the prices may come down in the future. Local traders have little to do when it comes to increasing or decreasing the prices of vegetables. They sell the products at the price at which they buy them.

Expressing his anger after coming to buy fish, Russell said, "The vegetable market is also on fire. Fish is not even being touched. If the price of pangasius and tilapia is 250 taka, how will ordinary people like us and our families survive?"
Fish trader Golam Rafiq said that the price is currently high due to the increase in fuel prices, transportation costs and the ban on fishing in the river. Fish is being bought at high prices from the wholesale market. Therefore, it is affecting the retail market.

Sohel Rana, who came to the city market to shop, said, "Even though the winter vegetables have arrived in the market, there has been no impact on the prices of vegetables. The fish market is hot. If the prices of fish from rivers in Tangail, which is surrounded by rivers, are out of people's reach, then what will the common people eat? Regular supervision is needed in the market. All this is the manipulation of the business syndicate. We are hostages to the syndicate."

Although there is discomfort in the fish market, there is some relief in the price of chicken. Broiler chicken is being sold at 180 to 190 taka per kilogram, layer chicken at 350 to 400 taka, and golden chicken at 300 to 350 taka. The prices of beef and mutton remain unchanged.
