
Cumilla records 56.5 mm rainfall : Continuous rain disrupts life, roads submerged

The normal life of Cumilla has been disrupted by continuous rain. Daily wage earners, street vendors, rickshaw pullers, students and working people, as well as traders sitting on the sidewalks along the roads, have suffered from the incessant rain, sometimes light and sometimes heavy.
Meanwhile, in this continuous rain, the water in the district town is knee-deep, and the roads are submerged in some places.
According to the Cumilla Meteorological Office, 56.5 mm of rainfall has been recorded in Cumilla in the last 24 hours. This trend of rainfall is likely to continue for the next two to three days. The district meteorological office has also announced the possibility of very heavy rains with strong winds in Cumilla for the next two to three days.
It has been seen on the ground that due to continuous rains, water has accumulated on various roads and embankments in Cumilla city. As a result, many roads have become unusable. People have been seen suffering in their movement. However, the hardest hit are the working class. Especially rickshaw pullers and daily wage earners. School and college students and office-going people have also suffered. CNG-powered auto-rickshaw, rickshaw and battery-powered auto-rickshaw drivers in Cumilla city have taken advantage of this adverse weather of continuous rain. Passengers and city residents have complained that the drivers of this public transport are charging extra fares beyond the specified fare.
Meanwhile, the continuous rain has caused knee-deep water to accumulate in the Nazrul Avenue area of Rani Bazar Road from Kandirpara in Cumilla city, from the Chamber of Commerce of Cumilla city to Ashoktala to Chhayabitan. In addition, several other roads in the city, including the EPZ road from Tomcham Bridge in Cumilla , are flooded. These roads have regularly accumulated water, creating holes and potholes.
Various parts of these roads have become dangerous due to the accumulation of water in the holes. Videos of rickshaws and auto-rickshaws carrying passengers overturning at various times have been spread on social media. Hundreds of people are suffering every day while traveling on these unusable roads. Cumilla EPZ factory workers, Upoma,Nurun Nahar and Mesbah Uddin said that their bones are aching while traveling on the road from Tomsam bridge in to EPZ. They are forced to travel on the road. Autorickshaws have overturned on this road at various times. They are demanding that the road be repaired by creating a quick drainage path.
Meanwhile, an autorickshaw driver Fazlu Mia said that when the monsoon season comes, the work on drains and roads in this city begins. The proof of this is the Nazrul Avenue area of the city. A kind of suffocating situation has been created while moving through the area from Karbhaban to Kandirpar. The City Corporation has created a place of suffering while creating a drainage path.
On the other hand, the rains of the last few days have created potholes and potholes at various places on the 104-kilometer Cumilla road of the Dhaka-Chittagong highway. Fast-moving vehicles are getting into accidents due to this.
In addition, the Highway Police has confirmed that traffic jams are being caused by small accidents due to potholes and potholes created on the highway in recent times.
Highway Police Cumilla Region Police Superintendent Khairul Alam said that the continuous rain during the monsoon has created numerous potholes and potholes on the highway. This is causing traffic congestion on the highway due to speeding vehicles getting into minor accidents. If the potholes and potholes are not filled up soon, the situation will get worse.

Regarding the rainfall forecast, Cumilla Meteorological Department Officer-in-Charge Syed Arifur Rahman said that 56.5 millimeters of rainfall has been recorded in the last 24 hours. The amount will increase further in the future. The ongoing rainfall will continue for the next two to three days. At the same time, there is a possibility of heavy rainfall with thunderstorms in Cumilla .
