Staff Correspondent

Bangladesh Coast Guard personnel detained five alleged smugglers and seized 650 bags of cement intended for illegal trafficking to Myanmar during a drive on the Meghna River in Lakshmipur.

Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon, Media Officer of the Coast Guard, confirmed the development on Friday afternoon, stating that Coast Guard Station Ramgati conducted the special operation near Char Abdullah under Ramgati Upazila around 4:00 pm on Thursday  following confidential information.

During the drive, Coast Guard teams intercepted and searched two suspicious boats, recovering 650 bags weighing 32,500 kilograms of duty-evaded cement valued at approximately Tk 3.25 lakh. The five individuals aboard were taken into custody alongside the two engine-driven boats used in the smuggling attempt.

The seized evidence and detained suspects are being processed for handover to local law enforcement to initiate legal proceedings.

Coast Guard authorities reaffirmed that operations to prevent maritime smuggling and illegal cross-border trade will continue across coastal waterways
