Sherpur DC Farida Yasmin takes responsibility for rebuilding homeless widow's house

Khorshed Alam, Sherpur

Sherpur Deputy Commissioner Farida Yasmin has stepped forward to take full responsibility for constructing a new house for Aklima Begum, a destitute and homeless widow from Jhenaigati upazila.

Aklima, wife of the late Abdus Samad, resides in Gomra village under Nalkura union and possesses no assets or stable means of livelihood, a crisis further exacerbated by her severe physical illnesses that leave her unable to perform any manual labor.

The family's hardships deepened nearly a decade ago following the death of her day-laborer husband. While her two sons moved away to live separately after their marriages, Aklima's abandoned daughter, Azmina, works as a domestic helper in neighborhood households to barely scrape together enough to feed the two-member family. Their current dwelling has become completely uninhabitable, depriving them of sleep even during minor rainfalls due to severe leaks. Because of their extreme financial constraints, the family has been unable to renovate or rebuild the structure.

After the miserable living conditions of Aklima Begum were highlighted in various newspapers and media reports, the matter caught the attention of Sherpur DC Farida Yasmin.

In a compassionate gesture, the Deputy Commissioner officially promised to get a proper house constructed for the elderly widow. Following the assurance from the district's top administrator, Aklima Begum expressed immense joy and relief, conveying her deep gratitude and praying for the long life of the Deputy Commissioner.
