After the hearing, the judge rejected the bail and ordered him to be sent to court.
Ataur Rahman, officer-in-charge of the Kotwali Police Station of Rangpur Metropolitan Police, said that the police arrested prominent businessman and Awami League leader Lipi Khan Bhorsa, an accused in the murder attempt case during the anti-discrimination student movement, in Dhaka on the morning of March 16. Earlier, he had accused former (recently withdrawn) Deputy Commissioner of Rangpur Metropolitan Police Mohammad Shibli Kaiser of demanding a bribe of Tk 10 lakh. Lipi Khan Bhorsa claimed that he was an accused in a case related to the anti-discrimination student movement on November 13. Deputy Commissioner of Mahanagar Police Shibli Kaiser, through businessman Amit Banik, the director of the Metropolitan Chamber, demanded a bribe of Tk 10 lakh from him to protect him by excluding his name from the case.
Lipi Khan filed a written complaint against Shibli Kaiser to the police headquarters, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner and the army on March 11. Lipi Khan is the daughter-in-law of the wealthy businessman Karim Uddin Bhorsa family of Rangpur. He is the chairman of SL Bhorsa Group and the best taxpayer. He is accused of funding the anti-discrimination student movement, including attempting to kill them. Lipi Khan Bhorsa had last bought a nomination paper to become an Awami League member of parliament in the reserved women's seat in the 2024 national parliamentary elections. He publicly participated in the election meetings of former Awami League commerce minister and then local MP Tipu Munsi.
According to the case report, during the anti-discrimination student movement, the protesters took a procession from the Grand Hotel intersection in the city on the afternoon of July 19 last year and took a position in front of the City Bazaar. At that time, the police and Awami League leaders and activists opened fire on them with weapons. Many were injured. In this incident, Mamunur Rashid Mamun, who was shot in the Mahanagar Kotwali Police Station on November 13 last year, filed a case of attempt to murder as the plaintiff. He has been named as accused number 179 in the case report.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, March 13, Lipi Khan Bhorsa manager Palash Hasan went to the Kotwali police station to file a case against the accused. At that time, Deputy Commissioner of Police Shibli Kaiser severely beat up the plaintiff manager Palash inside the police station and at one stage tried to snatch a weapon from his colleague to shoot him. In this incident, he was withdrawn on Saturday, March 15 and taken to the police headquarters.
Deputy Commissioner of Police of Rangpur Metropolitan Police Shibli Kaiser has been withdrawn and attached to the police headquarters on charges of bribery against the DC of Rangpur Metropolitan Police. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Administration) of the Metropolitan Police Habibur Rahman confirmed the matter.
