Sabuj migrated to Saudi Arabia four years ago with the dream of securing the future of his five-year-old child, treatment for his sick mother, and safe shelter for his disabled sister.
Family members said that Sabuj owed about 10,000 riyals to Ali and Abul Hossain of Kushtia, Bangladesh, while working in the Wadi Al-Dawasir area of Saudi Arabia. He was attacked when he tried to ask for the riyals. He had been beaten up once before. Later, when he asked for the money a second time, he was brutally beaten up, thrown under a moving car, and the car ran over him, the family alleged. He died on the spot.
Saudi police have filed a murder case and arrested the two Bangladeshis accused in the incident. They are currently in prison in Saudi Arabia, their families said.
After the murder, Sabuj's body remained in the morgue of Wadi Al-Dawasir General Hospital in Saudi Arabia for a long time. Due to legal complications and Iqama-related issues, it took a long time to bring the body back to the country.
Sabuj's coffin was received by his elderly mother Anwara Begum and nephew Sohel Rana from the airport this morning. Later in the afternoon, the body reached his village.
The sick mother, for whom Sabuj had worked hard abroad to treat her son, was crying and slapping her chest next to her son's body. His speech-impaired sister stood speechless next to Sabuj's bed in the courtyard of the house.
Sabuj's nephew Sohel Rana Apu said, "My uncle was killed by a car in a planned and very brutal manner. We have brought the body back to the country after overcoming various complications. We want exemplary punishment for those involved in this barbaric murder."
Sabuj's elderly mother Anwara Begum, breaking down in tears, said, "My son did nothing wrong. He was just asking for his own money back. You have emptied my chest and thrown me in the river. Where should I go with this orphaned grandson of mine and a disabled son? I ask Allah and the government to hang these murderers."
Acting Chairman of Hosnabad Union Parishad, Mosa. Mukta Begum said, "Such untimely and brutal death of Sabuj is a matter of deep sorrow for the entire union people. He was the only earner of the family. With his death, the family has become completely destitute and without guardians. On behalf of the Union Parishad, we will stand by his bereaved family and provide all necessary assistance. At the same time, we demand speedy trial and exemplary punishment of the criminals involved in this murder in Saudi Arabia."
