Election Office employee detained while attempting to cross into India thru' Habiganj border

A contractual employee of an election office was detained by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) while allegedly attempting to illegally cross the Bangladesh-India border in Habiganj.
The Habiganj Battalion (55 BGB) confirmed the matter on Sunday.
The detainee was identified as Sushanta Chandra Biswas, a Data Entry Operator at the Jamalganj Upazila Election Office in Sunamganj. He is the son of Satyendra Chandra Biswas of Sachail village under Tarail Police Station in Kishoreganj.
According to BGB, a patrol team detained Sushanta near Border Pillar No. 1939/M in the Monglam Basti Tea Garden area under the jurisdiction of Gutibari Border Outpost (BOP) of Habiganj Battalion (55 BGB).
BGB said he was attempting to cross the zero line and enter India when the patrol team detained him.
During preliminary interrogation, Sushanta reportedly told BGB that he had been working on a contractual basis at an election office since 2016 and was currently serving as a Data Entry Operator at the Jamalganj Upazila Election Office.
Officials at the concerned election office said Sushanta had been absent from work for nearly a month without authorised leave, and the office had been trying to trace his whereabouts.
Sushanta reportedly told BGB that he had stayed at a hotel in Sreemangal for several days before attempting to cross the border illegally with the assistance of a broker.
BGB recovered two Android mobile phones, Tk 12,185 in cash, two NID cards in his name, six different identification cards, an official office seal and other personal belongings from his possession.
BGB said its operations and surveillance along the border would continue to prevent illegal entry, smuggling and other border-related crimes.
Lt Col Tanzilur Rahman, commanding officer of Habiganj Battalion (55 BGB), said such operations would continue.
