Bangladesh Coast Guard detained 16 fishermen along with an illegal artisanal trawling boat and trawling nets at Chhera Dwip of St. Martin’s on Tuesday.
This information was confirmed on Tuesday night through a press release issued by Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haq.
According to the press release, based on secret information, at around 1:00 am on Tuesday, a special operation was conducted by Coast Guard ship Sabuj Bangla in the south-western sea area adjacent to Chhera Dwip of St. Martin’s. During the operation, one illegal artisanal trawling boat was seized from the area. Later, upon searching the seized boat, 16 fishermen were detained along with 12 trawling nets worth approximately Tk 30 million.
The process of taking necessary legal action against the seized nets, the artisanal trawling boat, and the detained fishermen is underway.
To protect fisheries resources, the Coast Guard will continue such operations in the future.
