Three employees of a railway catering company were arrested on Wednesday on charges of violating a young girl on a Chattogram-bound running train from Sylhet.

A train guard was also suspended in this connection.

The arrestees, identified as Md Jamal, 27, Md Sharif, 28, and Md Rashed, 27, were employees of SA Corporation, the food catering company for Bangladesh Railway, while the suspended guard was Abdur Rahim.

Sources said a 19-year-old girl was coming to Chattogram from Sylhet by the Udayan Express and staying at the food compartment.

She was about to go to Bandarban through Chattogram.

When the train was crossing the Laksam area at around 4:30am, the employees of the catering company allegedly teased her and raped her at one stage.

The train ‘Udayan Express’ left Sylhet at 10:00 pm on Tuesday and reached Chattogram at 8:00 am on Wednesday. However, the incident came to light in the evening.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) SM Shahidul Islam of the Railway Police Chattogram station said the three employees were arrested for allegedly raping a young girl in the food compartment of the Udayan Express.

They were produced before a court and sent to jail on Wednesday, he said.

A seven-day remand plea was submitted against them, the OC said, adding that the victim was undergoing treatment at the One-Stop Crisis Center of Chattogram Medical College and Hospital (CMCH).

Chattogram Railway Station Manager Mohammad Moniruzzaman said that though no formal complaint was filed in this connection, they came to know about the incident on Wednesday evening.

The concerned train guard, Abdur Rahim, has been suspended in connection with the incident, he added.
