Three people were killed and two others sustained burn injuries after a fire broke out at Mohammadia Market in Riazuddin Bazar of Chattogram city early Friday.

Among the victims two were identified as - Among the victims two were identified as - Mohammad Ridwan, 45, son of Shamsul Alam from Paschim Gatiadenga area of Satkania Upazila, and Saheed Hossain, 18, son of Beta Mia from the same area.

Abdur Razzak, Deputy Assistant Director of Chattogram Fire Service, said the fire started around 1.30am on Friday. On information eight units of fire fighters from Agrabad, Lamarbazar, Nandankanan and Chandanpura promptly rushed to the spot.

After hectic effort, they able to douse the flame at 5:30am.

Several people were trapped in the market, and among them, three died. Others fell ill due to the intense smoke. The narrow lanes obstructed our access, complicating the firefighting efforts, he added.

The injured were admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital and the bodies were sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy, he added.

The fire service official said they suspected that the fire might have originated from an electrical short circuit but detailed could be tell after investigation.

Meanwhile, Mozammel Haque, a leader of the Reazuddin Bazar Banik Kaylan Samity, said

the fire originated at a shop named Brothers’ Telecom of eight-storey Rezwan Complex, where mobile parts and electric device shops house, of the Reazuddin Bazar on Tamakkundi Lane by New Market, engulfing nearby Mohammadi Plaza.

He said several employees were asleep and trapped in different shops when the fire broke out. Three of them succumbed to smoke inhalation as they couldn't come out in time, he said, adding that several businesses burnt in the incident.
