Results of 3 research projects of DU presented

The results of three researches conducted under the supervision of Dhaka University Chromosome Research Center were presented on Tuesday.

These results were presented in a seminar organized in the auditorium of the Department of Botany. Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan was present as the chief guest on the occasion.

Director of Chromosome Research Center Professor Dr. Professor Muhammad Nurul Islam, Dean of the Faculty of Biology, presided over the ceremony. Md. Akhtar Hossain Khan and Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology Professor Dr. Md. Enamul Haque spoke as special guest. Chairperson of the Department of Microbiology Professor Dr. Shakila Nargis Khan, assistant professor of plant science department. Kiswar Jahan Sinthi and Assistant Professor Abira Khan of Department of Gene Engineering and Biotechnology presented their research results. Teachers and students of various departments participated in the question and answer session in the seminar. Professor of Botany Department. Mihir Lal Saha proposed vote of thanks.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmad Khan expressed sincere thanks to the researchers and said that besides reading, conducting basic research is one of the most important tasks of the university. Our teachers are doing this work with utmost sincerity under various constraints and limited budget. Emphasizing on enriching the university through contemporary research work, he said, research centers should play a more active role in this regard.

He called upon the teachers, researchers and students to present the research works appropriately in the global environment with the aim of raising the position of Dhaka University to a respectable level in the international ranking.

Professor Dr. Shakila Nargis Khan researches Aedes mosquito control using toxin produced by microbes in an environmentally friendly way instead of using chemical pesticides. The toxin produced is capable of killing Aedes mosquito larvae within 6-8 hours. The researcher hopes that it will play an effective role in dengue control.

Dr. Kiswar Jahan Sinthi studies the adverse effects of climate change on zinc-fortified rice varieties. This research is expected to play a helpful role in increasing the production of rice.

Abira Khan researches the genetic underpinnings of autoimmune diseases. The researchers hope that this research will play a role in the control of Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
