Staff Correspondent

Jatiya Press Club members strongly demanded that the metro rail station located in front of National Press Club should be renamed as 'National Press Club Station' immediately instead of Bangladesh Secretariat Station.

They called upon the management committee of the Club to take immediate action in this regard.

At the Extra ordinary General Meeting of the National Press Club on Friday, they said that during the construction of the Metrorail, the National Press Club infrastructure has been damaged.

Despite repeated demands from the Press Club, the members expressed their anger as the station was not named after the Press Club.

The meeting started with the National Anthem presided over by the Club President, Farida Yasmin. After  recitation of Holy Quran, Gita, Tripitaka and Bible reading, Club Joint Secretary Ayub Bhuiyan read out the minutes of the bi-annual general meeting of the club held on December 30, 2022. After that General Secretary Shyamal Dutta and Treasurer Shahed Chowdhury presented their respective reports. At that time, Senior Vice President Hasan Hafiz and Joint Secretary Md. Ashraf Ali were also present on the stage.

A total of 15 members participated in the discussion on the report. They are Saiful Alam, Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, Md. Omar Farooq, Tarun Tapan Chakraborty, Syed Shahnewaz Karim, Ummul Wara Sweety, Khairul Alam, Rafiq Ahmed Mufdi (Mufdi Ahmed), Md. Siddiqur Rahman, AKM Mohsin, Akhtar Hossain, Delwar Hasan, Saeed Tarek, Nazmul Haque Sarkar and Monir Hossain Liton.

In the discussion, the members made various suggestions including providing new membership posts, improving the quality of food in the canteen, bringing all the members of the club under the welfare fund and increasing the health services of the members. President Farida Yasmin assured to actively consider all proposals and implement them gradually.

He called on the government to provide security to journalists while performing their professional duties in the upcoming National Assembly elections.

At the same time, he said, killing innocent people including mothers and children by setting fire to trains and buses in the name of agitation cannot be the work of any civilized and democratic society. He strongly condemned and protested against such brutal activities on behalf of the journalist community. He also called on everyone to be vigilant in this regard.
