The controversial Managing Director (MD) of Chattogram WASA, Engineer A K M Fazlullah, has finally been removed from his position.
The decision was announced on Wednesday (October 30) in a notification signed by the Deputy Secretary of the Local Government Division, Md. Abdur Rahman. The directive stated, "In accordance with the authority granted by Section 28 Ka of the Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024, Fazlullah’s contractual appointment has been canceled, and he has been removed from his position."
Fazlullah retired as a superintendent engineer in 2000. After the Awami League came to power, he was appointed as the chairman of the Chattogram WASA board in 2009 and was permanently assigned to the MD position in 2011. For 15 years, he has been embroiled in allegations of irregularities in various projects and nepotism in appointments, creating much controversy.
As MD, Fazlullah failed to resolve the water crisis, engaged in project cost overruns, missed deadlines, and made unnecessary appointments, which brought the quality of service at Chattogram WASA into question. His removal brings hope for positive changes in WASA's operations, according to concerned parties.
