Additionally, three severely injured individuals were rescued from the same vessel, two of whom later succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. The death toll from this tragic incident has risen to seven.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Water Transport Workers’ Union (B-1952) has strongly condemned and protested this brutal act. The central president of the organization, Md. Motiar Rahman, and general secretary Md. Suman Bhuiyan issued a joint statement expressing their outrage over the killings.
The statement, signed by the union’s joint general secretary Jakir Hossain Milon, was released to the media on Monday (December 23).
In the statement, the leaders said, “We strongly condemn and protest the heinous killing of eight sailors aboard the M.V. Al Bakhira (Reg. No. 13946), a coastal vessel owned by Messrs. Brishti Enterprise, by a gang of robbers near Harina Ferry Ghat in Chandpur. The sailors were brutally murdered by hacking and slitting their throats.”
The leaders further demanded that the perpetrators be brought to justice swiftly and given exemplary punishment. They also urged the government and the concerned authorities to take immediate and effective measures to put an end to robberies and extortion on waterways.
