ACC sues previous VC, registrar of RUET

RUET Correspondent

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case on Wednesday against a former vice-chancellor and a former registrar of the Rajshahi University of Science and Technology (RUET) for illegally profiting from additional employee recruitment, and student admissions.

The accused are Dr Md Rafiqul Islam Sheikh, the previous vice-chancellor of RUET, and Dr Md Selim Hossain, the university’s previous registrar.

Aminul Islam, deputy director of ACC’s Rajshahi divisional office, filed the case claiming the accused caused Tk1.26 crore losses for the government by admitting more students than the university could afford and recruiting more personnel than there was vacancy for.

Using their influence at RUET, the two professors collaborated behind-the-scenes to make undue profit while causing losses for the government, according to case filings. They gave more marks to some university admission test candidates at the viva exams to help the candidates make up for low scores at written exams and eventually secure entry into the university.

Furthermore, the alleged officials recruited more people than was required in certain posts and employed personnel in departments with no vacancies.
