Police arrested a man, who allegedly killed a seven-year-old girl after rape on Sunday midnight, from Bakolia area in Chattogram city on Tuesday.

Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Rumana Akhter sent the accused Meer Hossain, 37, of Cumilla, to jail in the evening after recording his confessional statement under Section 164.

Earlier on Monday night, police recovered the body of Nasrin Sukhi, 7, from a dustbin concealed inside a sack at BRTC Falmandi area next to a police box on road No.1 around 9:45 pm under Kotwali police jurisdiction.

The victim's mother filed a case with Kotwali Police Station on Monday afternoon. Following the case, police arrested Meer Hossain, who was a scrap seller by profession, after scrutinising CCTV footage, which showed him dumping the body.

According to the confessional statement, Meer picked up the victim from Andarkilla just after midnight on Sunday, luring her with promises of chocolate and chips.

He then, took the girl to the CRB area and violated her there. When the girl became senseless, he strangled the girl to death out of fear to get caught and left the body there. However, he came back again on Monday evening and dumped the body in the dustbin.

Assistant Commissioner (Kotwali) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police Atanu Chakraborty said the victim, who lived on the street with her mother in Andarkillah area, went missing shortly after midnight on Sunday. She was last seen sitting in front of Andarkillah General Hospital.

"On Monday night, police recovered her body covered with blood and injury marks in her private parts, which confirmed that she was raped before murder. Later, police collected CCTV footage, which showed a man who came to the area on Monday evening riding a rickshaw van dumping the body in the dustbin," said AC Atanu Chakraborty.

AC Atanu said the criminal used to sexually abuse street children at different times, luring them with promises of food.

The body was sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for autopsy and legal action was being taken in this regard.
