The much-discussed former Chairman of Lalmonirhat District Council Md. Abu Bakkar Siddique Shyamal (42) and his associate, former Patgram Upazila Chhatra League leader Kamrul, have been arrested by the Lalmonirhat DB Police from the capital.

Lalmonirhat District Police Superintendent Md. Tariqul Islam confirmed this in a press release on Thursday.

Abu Bakkar Siddique Shyamal is the son of Atiar Rahman of Madhya Guddimari area of Hatibandha Upazila of Lalmonirhat. He is the former Chairman of Lalmonirhat District Council and a member of Lalmonirhat District Awami League and the organizational secretary of Hatibandha Upazila Awami League. There are multiple cases against him in Hatibandha Police Station and RMP Kotwali Police Station. His associate Md. Kamrul Hasan (32) is the former president of Patgram Upazila Chhatra League, a member of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, Central Committee and an active member of Joy Bangla Brigade. Kamrul is the son of Fazlul Haque of Dahagram Angarpota Sardar Para area of Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat.

Sources said, on the direction of Lalmonirhat District Police Superintendent Md. Tariqul Islam, Lalmonirhat DB Police OC Saad Ahmed led a raid on Nikunja 02 under Khilkhet Police Station in Dhaka and Sobahanbagh area under Dhanmondi Police Station on Wednesday night based on secret information and arrested them.

Since the fall of the Hasina government on August 5, detained Md. Abu Bakar Siddique Shyamal and his associate Md. Kamrul Hasan were hiding in different places and were trying to destabilize the country by creating public opinion with the help of social media (Facebook) to rehabilitate the Awami government. Inspired by the video speech of fugitive Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Facebook groups, WhatsApp groups, Telegram groups, YouTube channels and Zoom platforms, they were planning to overthrow the current government and bring the fugitive Prime Minister back to power.

To implement their plan, they have been organizing their workforce to carry out destructive acts against the current legitimate government by connecting with leaders and activists of Awami League and its affiliates and supporters on Facebook across the country, creating hatred against the current government and even creating tension among the public, including acts harmful to state security, public safety and public order.

In this regard, Lalmonihat District Police Superintendent Md. Tariqul Islam said that as part of the Devil Hunt operation, they were arrested in Nikunja 02 under Khilkhet Police Station and Sobahanbagh under Dhanmondi Police Station.

The arrested Shyamal and his associates were trying to destabilize the country by creating public opinion through social media to rehabilitate the fascist Awami government after hiding after 05 August 2024. There are multiple cases against them in Hatibandha and various police stations. Later, they were sent to court on Thursday afternoon.
