Farmers expect bumper mustard cultivation in Srinagar

Khan Sujan, Srinagar (Munshiganj)

Farmers in Srinagar Upazila have started mustard cultivation across various lands, including the Arial Beel and 14 unions of the upazila.

They are currently busy taking care of the mustard crops. Early cultivation of mustard has begun in areas such as Madankhali, Baraikhali, and Sridharpur within the Arial Beel. Additionally, farmers in Alampur, Shologhar, Birtara, and Atpara are also engaged in mustard farming.

However, the rising costs of agricultural inputs, plowing, and labor wages have slightly increased the expenses of mustard farming. Despite this, farmers are optimistic about achieving profits if the weather remains favorable.

During a field visit, it was observed that hybrid BARI-19 mustard varieties have been cultivated on higher lands in Arial Beel. Farmers are also sowing seeds of local varieties like Rai/Chaita and Maghi mustard.

Gazi Abdul Mannan from Sridharpur said that he cultivated mustard on about 60 decimals of land last year. Although he couldn’t achieve the desired yield due to unseasonal rain, the good price of the produced mustard satisfied him.
