Attack on JnU Proctor: JnUTA Issues 72-hr ultimatum with 3 demands

Md Tanvir Hossain, JnU

The Jagannath University Teachers’ Association (JnUTA) has issued a 72-hour ultimatum demanding justice for the attack on the university’s proctor, Professor Dr. Muhammad Tazammol Hoque. Their demands include bringing the attackers to justice, forming an investigation committee, and removing bus and leguna stands from the areas surrounding the university.

The ultimatum was announced during a human chain protest held at the university’s Shaheed Minar premises on Wednesday noon in response to the attack on the proctor.

During the event, teachers stated, “All those involved in this attack must be brought under the law within the next 72 hours. The university administration must form an investigation committee and ensure the removal of all bus and leguna stands from the areas surrounding the university, including Ray Saheb Bazar.

Attacks on teachers and students of the university equate to an attack on the institution itself. We demand exemplary punishment for those involved in the assault on our proctor. The attackers openly stated that they couldn’t find JnU students, so they decided to attack the teachers instead. This was clearly premeditated and poses a grave threat to the university.”

JnUTA General Secretary and Chairman of the Islamic Studies Department, Professor Md. Rais Uddin, said, “The attack on Professor Dr. Muhammad Tazammol Hoque appears to be a premeditated assault by forces opposed to the university’s progress. On behalf of the Teachers’ Association, we demand that those responsible for this incident be brought to justice within 72 hours. An investigation committee must be formed to determine whether any university teacher or student was involved in this attack. Additionally, the bus and leguna stands near Ray Saheb Bazar must be removed within the same timeframe.”

JnUTA President and Professor of Management Studies, Md. Mosharraf Hossain, stated, “Such incidents are unacceptable. If our demands are not met, we will be compelled to announce stricter actions. The Teachers’ Association will always remain vigilant to ensure the safety and security of all members of the Jagannath University family.”

It is noteworthy that on December 6, during the evening, unknown miscreants attacked the car of Professor Dr. Tazammol Hoque near Tatibazar in Old Dhaka. Both the proctor and his driver were injured in the incident. Subsequently, three individuals were arrested in connection with the attack.
