Kotalipara (Gopalganj) Correspondent 

A day-long fair 'Sukanta Mela 'will be held in Kotalipara, Gopalganj, on the occasion of the death anniversary of poet Sukanta Bhattacharya. The local administration has completed all the preparations for the fair.

The fair will be held Tuesday at Sukanta's ancestral home in Unshia village, Amtali Union of Kotalipara. The fair will be inaugurated by Gopalganj District Commissioner Muhammad Kamruzzaman, who will be the chief guest.

The fair will feature poetry recitations, essay writing, and drawing competitions by students from various educational institutions in the area. In addition, there will be cultural performances by renowned artists. A village fair will be set up with a variety of children's toys, handicrafts, and cottage industry products. The poet's house and its surrounding areas have been beautifully decorated for the event. The local administration and law enforcement agencies will continuously monitor the poet's house during the fair.

Kotalipara UNO  (Additional Charge ) Mohammad Moinul Haque stated, "With the help of local dignitaries, the Upazila administration has taken the initiative to organize this fair. We have completed all the arrangements. I hope the administration and the local people will continue to organize such vibrant events to preserve the poet’s memory. Additionally, we should take various initiatives to spread the ideals of poet Sukanta Bhattacharya among today’s youth."

It is mentioned  that poet Sukanta Bhattacharya was born on August 15, 1926, at his maternal uncle’s house on Mahima Haldar Street in Kalighat, Kolkata. His father was Nibaron Bhattacharya, and his mother was Suniti Devi. Sukanta Bhattacharya died  on May 13, 1947, at the young age of 21. His notable works include Chhatpatra, Ghum Nei, Purvabhash, Abhijan, and Hartal. Each of his poems carries a strong protest against injustice and inequality.
