
Youth beaten to death in Cox’s Bazar: NCP leader among three sent to jail

A court in Cox’s Bazar has ordered three individuals, including a local leader of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP), to be sent to jail in connection with the beating death of a young man in Sadar upazila. However, police have confirmed that the victim’s family has yet to file a formal case at the local police station regarding the incident.
Additional Superintendent of Police Mohammad Jasim Uddin of Cox’s Bazar said that Senior Judicial Magistrate Akhtar Zabeer’s court issued the order on Tuesday afternoon.
The accused sent to jail are Rayan Kashem, son of Jahangir Kashem of Baharchhara area in Cox’s Bazar town, Mohammad Hossain, a night guard at Jahangir Kashem’s privately-owned Allaowala Hatchery, and Mohammad Mizan.
Rayan Kashem is the Cox’s Bazar coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and a local leader of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP). His father, Jahangir Kashem, is a controversial former leader of the student organization Islami Chhatra Shibir and currently serves as a central vice president of the Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party).
Additional Superintendent Jasim Uddin said the incident took place late Sunday night at the Allaowala Hatchery, located near the old bridge area of Khurushkul in Cox’s Bazar Sadar. Four people were initially detained by police shortly after the incident. Among them, Rayan Kashem was injured in a mob attack by an enraged crowd and was admitted to hospital under police custody. Later, as his condition was deemed stable, doctors at Chattogram Medical College Hospital discharged him. Police brought him back to Cox’s Bazar on Monday night.
On Tuesday morning, three of the suspects were presented before a Cox’s Bazar court, which ordered them to jail following a hearing. One of the four initially detained was released.Jasim Uddin added that no official complaint has yet been filed by the victim’s family. Police will register a case upon receiving a written complaint but are continuing operations to identify and arrest all those involved.Meanwhile, student activists of the July Movement announced a torch procession on Tuesday evening demanding the release of Rayan Kashem.It may be noted that the incident took place late Sunday night when a young man was allegedly beaten to death at the Allaowala Hatchery in Khurushkul Union under Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazila.The deceased has been identified as Ali Akbar, son of Ali Ahmed from Kuliapara area of Khurushkul Union in Cox’s Bazar Sadar.The victim’s family claimed that Ali Akbar was forcibly taken from his home and murdered in a premeditated attack under the false accusation of fish theft. They alleged the murder was the result of an ongoing land dispute.
Before being assaulted by an enraged mob, NCP leader Rayan Kashem had told the media that Ali Akbar was caught red-handed while attempting to steal from their hatchery. He claimed the night guards confronted him and that Ali Akbar attacked them first, prompting the guards to retaliate in self-defense — leading to his death.
