Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) celebrated World Milk Day-2026 for the fourteenth time.

This year's theme for the celebration of the day was 'Celebrating the Contribution of Women Farmers in the Dairy Industry'. On the occasion of the day, about 2,500 children from the university and eight surrounding schools were given milk. At the same time, for the first time, a woman dairy farmer and a woman milk processing entrepreneur were given special honors in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the dairy industry.

The day was celebrated on Wednesday  through various day-long programs initiated by the university's Department of Dairy Science and in collaboration with various government and private institutions and dairy industry-related organizations.

A colorful rally was taken out from in front of the Animal Husbandry Faculty at 10 am. The university's teachers, students, researchers, dairy farmers and various professionals participated in it. The rally passed through various important roads of the university and ended at the Syed Nazrul Islam Conference Room. Later, a discussion meeting and award distribution ceremony were held there. After that, an awareness seminar and career counseling were held for the students of that faculty at 3 pm.

The seminar was chaired by Prof  Dr. Mohammad Ashiqul Islam, Head of the Dairy Science Department of BKU, and the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Dr. G. M. Mujibur Rahman, was present as the chief guest at the event.

Special guests included Dean of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Professor Dr. Md. Ruhul Amin, Mymensingh Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Md. Saifur Rahman, Chairman of Bangladesh Milk Producers Cooperative Union Limited (Milk Vita) SM Amir Hamza Shatil, Managing Director of Pran Group Elias Mridha, and Head of Regulatory and Scientific Affairs of Nestle Bangladesh Rebecca Sharmin.

The seminar featured speakers including retired professor of the Department of Dairy Science Dr. M. A. Samad Khan, Professor Dr. Md. Nurul Islam and President of Bangladesh Animal Husbandry Association Prof Dr. Md. Abul Hashem. The keynote address was presented by Professor Dr. A. K. M. Masum, Member Secretary of the World Milk Day Celebration Committee.

At the time, award-winning dairy processing entrepreneur Umme Atia said, "I have been working on a dairy product factory in Bogra on my own initiative for about 6 years. We make sweets, chana and yogurt from about 10 to 14 maunds of milk every day. After collecting milk directly from farmers, it is pasteurized and all these products are made. This is the first time I have received such an award from a university. The recognition of my work has further increased my interest."

Another farmer who received the award, Johnny Akter, said, "I take care of a total of 15 cows at my house. About 40 to 50 liters of milk are produced every day. From taking care of the cows to milking and selling the milk, I do everything single-handedly. As a marginal farmer in the village, I never thought that I would receive such an award. It feels very good."

BAU Vice Chancellor (Acting) Prof Dr. G. M. Mujibur Rahman said, "First of all, I would like to thank the Department of Dairy Science for organizing such a beautiful program. This has increased the respect of our university internationally.
Besides, a drawing competition and a home kitchen dairy recipe competition were organized for children and teenagers on the previous day to mark the day.
