World Environment Day 2026 was observed in Faridpur on Thursday with a discussion meeting and prize distribution ceremony aimed at promoting environmental conservation alongside sustainable development.

The event, jointly organized by the Faridpur District Administration and the local Department of Environment, was held at 11:00 AM in the Faridpur DC’s conference room.

Faridpur Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Mazharul Islam graced the occasion as the chief guest. Presided over by Additional District Commissioner (General) Md. Sohrab Hossain, the program commenced with a recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by a welcome address delivered by Md. Said Anwar, Deputy Director of the Faridpur Department of Environment.

The seminar brought together a distinguished panel of government officials and civil society representatives, including Additional Superintendent of Police Raihan Gafur, Deputy Civil Surgeon Shah Md. Badruddoza, and Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) Agriculturist Md. Shahaduzzaman. Principal of Faridpur Technical Training Center Engineer Md. Akhtaruzzaman, Deputy Director of the Department of Youth Development ASM Moinul Ahsan, Founder Director of Faridpur Development Agency (FDA) Md. Azharul Islam, and senior journalist Panna Bala also attended the session alongside representatives from various non-governmental and voluntary organizations.

Chief Guest Mazharul Islam emphasized the critical need to balance national development with ecological preservation. He observed that the environmental degradation witnessed over the past century has drastically outpaced the natural shifts since the dawn of the Earth. He cautioned that while progress is indispensable, it must not cross sustainable boundaries, urging the public and policymakers to ensure that the race for modern infrastructure does not end up destroying the planet's fragile ecosystem.

Following the discussion session, the guests distributed prizes among the winning students who had participated in various environmental awareness competitions organized to mark the occasion.
