World Environment Day observed in Barguna with call for sustainable waste management

Barguna Sadar Correspondent

World Environment Day 2026 was observed in Barguna on Thursday with a strong call to mitigate climate change risks and implement sustainable waste management practices.

Organized by the district administration under the national theme "Today's action, tomorrow's security," the day-long programs included a colorful rally, an awareness seminar, an essay competition, and a prize distribution ceremony.

The rally commenced at 10:00 AM from the Deputy Commissioner’s office premises, paraded the major roads of the town, and concluded at the Golden Jubilee Auditorium.

Additional District Commissioner (General) Animesh Biswas presided over the discussion meeting, where Deputy Director of the Local Government Division A.S.M. Kashem addressed the gathering as the chief guest. Speakers at the seminar highlighted the severe vulnerabilities of the coastal district, detailing how marginal communities in Barguna bear the brunt of global carbon emissions and climate shifts. They pointed out that the rising frequency of cyclones, expanding sea-level salinity, and the intrusion of tidal water into agricultural lands have posed existential threats to local livelihoods.

The discussion focused heavily on the fragile state of local urban waste management. Zila Parishad Administrator and District BNP Convener Nazrul Islam Molla, alongside other dignitaries, raised serious concerns over the unregulated use of plastic bottles and polythene bags, which have choked the municipal drainage system and disrupted the town's ecological balance.

Environmental workers, including Arifur Rahman, urged the authorities to go beyond symbolic day-long observations and strictly implement grassroots waste segregation and plastic recycling mechanisms. District BNP Member Secretary Humayun Hasan Shahin, Barguna Press Club President Md. Hafizur Rahman, and Islami Andolan General Secretary Abdur Shakur also spoke on the occasion, calling for strict monitoring against plastic pollution.

In response to these ecological challenges, Chief Guest A.S.M. Kashem disclosed that the government has adopted an ambitious plan to plant 50 million trees across the country over the next five years to counter climate risks.

He added that the administration is prioritizing canal re-excavation projects to tackle the drinking water crisis and protect coastal farmlands. Water Development Board Executive Engineer Hannan Pradhan shared that construction of sustainable, eco-friendly embankments is underway, while Barguna Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shah Aziz and DAE Deputy Director Rathindranath Biswas reiterated their commitment to local green initiatives.

District Environment Officer Hemayet Mahmud conducted the program and outlined the administrative roadmap for modernizing waste management systems across various areas of Barguna. The local administration assured that market monitoring and anti-polythene drives will be intensified shortly.

Environmental analysts concluded that the ultimate success of these commitments depends entirely on the visible field-level execution of tree plantation, embankment reinforcement, and modernized waste management to secure the future of the vulnerable coastal populace.
